How to Convert Embroidery Designs to DST (for Single-Needle Machines)

You found the perfect design, bought or downloaded it… and your machine won’t read it. It came as a PES (or JEF, or something else), but your single-needle machine wants a DST.

Good news: this is a small problem with a quick fix. Converting a design to DST is a format change — not re-making the design from scratch.

That distinction matters, because this is exactly where beginners get talked into expensive software and courses they don’t need yet. You’re not digitizing. You already have a finished, stitchable design — it just needs to come out the door in a different file type.

How to do it

  1. Open your design in Unzip2Stitch — it reads the common formats and shows you the design as a full-color picture.
  2. Check it looks right, and that it fits your hoop.
  3. Use the For your machine download and save it as a DST. (Converting a whole folder at once? Batch export does them in one go.)

That’s it. Same design, new format, ready for your machine.

Two honest things to know

  • Color: DST won’t carry the colors over — no format conversion can add what DST doesn’t store. So before you save to DST, see the design in color and note the thread order (here’s how). Then stitch with that reference in hand.
  • Resizing: if you also need to make the design bigger or smaller, a stitch file can only be resized about 10% up or down — every stitch was placed for one size, in any program. Unzip2Stitch checks each design’s density and tells you how far that design will safely go. Beyond 10%, it’s not resizing anymore — it’s re-digitizing, which is a job for a person. → We’ll re-digitize it for you
