You’ve got a DST file sitting on your computer. Now what?
First, the thing nobody tells you: a DST won’t open by double-clicking it. Your computer doesn’t come with anything that reads embroidery files, so you’ll usually get a blank icon or an error. That’s not a broken file — it’s just that embroidery files need embroidery software to open. (That blank-icon moment confuses everyone — here’s why it happens.)
Step by step
- Open it in embroidery software. Open the DST in Unzip2Stitch and you’ll finally see your design — as a full-color picture, not a gray blob. (See why DST looks colorless and how to fix it.)
- Check it fits your hoop. Unzip2Stitch’s Hoop tools show your hoop outline; Auto-fit and Center to hoop make sure nothing falls outside the stitchable area (anything outside the outline won’t stitch).
- Check your colors and resize if needed. Note the thread order in the Threads panel. If you need a slightly different size, resize within about 10% — Unzip2Stitch tells you how far the design will safely go.
- Make a reference. Save as picture or print a Production sheet so you know what you’re aiming for while you stitch.
- Send it to your machine. Save the DST to a USB stick and load it on your machine. → Getting designs onto your machine with a USB
Then hoop your fabric and stitch. That’s the whole journey — file to finished.
